Wareham Remembrance Sunday

No parade or official wreath laying at memorials, but a limited church service will go ahead...

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY IN WAREHAM is a day of great civic pride and community spirit as we come together to honour those fallen in battle. Unfortunately, due to the current Covid19 restrictions around social distancing and events, it will not be possible to hold a parade this year on Sunday 8 November.

Many towns and parishes throughout the country have had to cancel all Remembrance events, including church services. The Town Council, Church and Royal British Legion in Wareham didn’t want to do that, however, we were mindful that we must adhere to the rules and ensure that we maintain the safety of our residents and organisations wishing to pay their respects in an act of remembrance. Lady St Mary Church is therefore holding a Civic Service of Remembrance which will be by invitation only. The number in church is sadly restricted to 100, including the choir and clergy, due to social distancing requirements, but it will still be possible for all our representative organisations to attend.

There will be no wreath laying at either St Martins or Lady St Mary war memorials. Instead, as part of the church service, representatives from all attending organisations will be called to lay their wreaths at the alter steps. These wreaths will then be taken up to the memorials later during the day.

Personal tributes and wreath laying...

Anyone wishing to lay a personal wreath or poppy at either of the war memorials is welcome to do so, but we ask that you avoid the busy times of 11am or between 12.30 and 1pm when the wreaths will be brought from the church. If you are intending to lay a personal tribute, please observe social distancing and avoid any more than 6 people around the memorials at any one time.

We would like to encourage all our residents to stand on their doorsteps at 11am in quiet remembrance of the fallen. This is being encouraged across the country and it would be lovely to see Wareham residents join this commemoration.
