Christians are having to learn to worship in different ways
For many years people have been saying, “You don’t have to go to church to be a Christian!” Well now, with the coronavirus lockdown, the adherents of this old adage are having their day and, with the church buildings shut, Christians are having to learn to worship in different ways. Online services (available here) have come to the fore and pastoral ministry by telephone, email and social media have become the order of the day.
The interesting thing is that as well as regular attendees of church tuning in to online services, a good number of others are too! In a recent survey it was found that a quarter of adults in the UK have watched or listened to a religious service since the lockdown began and one in twenty have started praying! The Church of England has reported record numbers of people are tuning into online or broadcast services, and over 6,000 people phoned a prayer hotline in the first 48 hours of its operation.
And it’s not just the older generation, in the same survey it was found that a third of young adults, between 18 and 34 had accessed a service online or by other means. This is a higher percentage than in the over 55 age group. One final interesting statistic is that one in five of those questioned said that they had never been to church!
This time of shutdown has something to teach us all it seems
The Lord moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform! It seems that this time of shutdown has something to teach us all, I hope that we will all have the wisdom to seek what this is rather than rushing to get things back to how they were before. That said, there are many from the churches who are praying for those adversely affected by this present crisis, and I know the churches of Wareham will do all that they can to help in whatever ways we can in the coming days, weeks and months. The church is here to serve others.
